Unit 12 - more draft images

I spent Tuesday night working on the remaining images, 3 of them, displayed below:

The middle image is more 'me', the others cover the brief. The full size versions & the rest of the Unit 12 Flickr Set can be viewed here.

I may yet come up with something else. I was uUnable to print them out at college on Wednesday night, because the Giclee had no ink (!). So I have to wait until next week.

Unit 12 - draft image

Just completed this for Unit 12:

It needs to be tidied up - but it's one of a good few ideas I have for this brief. More to follow soon.

NB - for different sizes, go the page on Flickr.

Unit 12 Studio Shoot

I shot my ideas in the studio on Tuesday night. Beforehand, I looked over my ideas with my tutor, Kevin, and whilst he didn't disapprove, he reminded me that I had to stay with the Brief - this is an advertising shoot for food. So it looks like I may have to slant it towards Fair Trade products after all. I'll come back and post and image later.

I now need to spend time going over my photos, and developing some ideas for slogans etc for both this and the location photos. The deadline is just over 10 days away.

Too late...

I handed in my Unit 17 prints on Tuesday night. And I also turned my attention to the colour contact sheets from the Studio shoot back in November (which I've only had over a month). But having browsed them, it looks like I missed some really good images that could have worked well.

This one's a gem:

I will carry on scanning and adding them to the Prêt à Pörter set on Flickr as time goes by.

Hated by the Daily Mail

Found a link to this on the NUJ website - a Daily Mail headline generator. Here are 10 random generations:

COULD GAYS IMPREGNATE CLIFF RICHARD?

WILL IMMIGRANTS HURT THE CHURCH?

WILL BRUSSELS STRIP MICHAEL HOWARD OF ALL DIGNITY?

DOES BRIAN PADDICK RUIN THE QUEEN?

COULD CHANNEL 4 TAX THE QUEEN?

WILL THE BBC SCROUNGE OFF THE BRITISH PEOPLE?

WILL ALASTAIR CAMPBELL ROB YOUR DAUGHTERS BLIND?

COULD THE GERMANS INFECT THE POLICE WITH AIDS?

WILL THE E.U. HURT YOUR HOUSE?

DO THE GERMANS RIP OFF THE BRITISH PEOPLE?

I'm studying the Daily Hate for an essay, and these headlines are pretty accurate to the overall tone of this fascist rag.

Unit 12 location shoot

There are 8 branches of Starbucks in Manchester. 5 of them are within a few hundred yards of each other.

I spent yesterday afternoon in Manchester taking photos of Starbucks branches. Boring, yes and I got a lot of stares from people who happened to be sat taking a break. But I also got a lot of shots which I think may have potential to be used as part of an Advertisement. Not great shots, but they are part of an overall composition.

I made sure to leave enough space in the images to allow for text etc. I'm thinking of using slogans which will provide the main impact for the Ad.

One thing that was obvious today and may play a part in a composition, is the number of Starbucks concentrated in a relatively small area. This is known as "clustering", one of Starbucks' best-known business strategies - an attempt to raise its market share overall even if this depresses the profitability of individual Starbucks branches. It's another example of capital's tendency to preduce a monoculture.

I also picked up some props, which may be handy later on. The Studio shoot should take place next week, when I have the studio booked. More then.

Unfairtrade

I've been messing - practising some detournement for use with my Unit 12 Brief. If I don't succeed in being completely lazy, I will get out today and sort out the location part (don't hold your breath).

Unit 17 prints are mounted

Approaching the final chapter of this veritable saga, the damn things are now mounted. It took me all day to measure up and cut the mounts - I had so many to do because I had promised copies for the model.

Now all that is needed is to hand them in for marking, although I should only really be able to get a 'Pass' being that the deadline has been missed.

Exhibiting at the Royal Exchange ...

Bit of a coup this, but the maxim 'if you don't ask you don't get' is very true. One of our fellow students have managed to obtain the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester as a venue for our Final Major Project Exhibition. We get a whole week at the end of June, gratis.

All I have to do now is start taking pictures for it ...

Unit 17, Unit 10 marks

Bit of a surprise tonight when I get back my marks for the stuff I have handed in so far. The verdict is as follows:

Unit 10 Essay - distinction

Unit 10/25 presentation - distinction

Unit 10 artwork - distinction

Unit 17 presentation - distinction

Unit 17 Essay - distinction

Full house. Well, I was a bit gobsmacked, and given that I had been feeling more than a little disillusioned, it has given me some much-needed motivation to carry on and continue.

Unit 17 prints finished

At last. This project has absorbed so much of my attention over the past few months. If everything had been in place, it could have been finished a couple of months ago, and to the deadline.

But it has got in the way of other things. And I now have relatively little time left to complete everything else. Thanks TCT.
